I think it’s time to give y’all a little sneak peek into our home. Elliott and I bought our house a little over two years ago and we FINALLY started putting our personal touch on it. One of my favorite projects to date is our master bedroom makeover.
We were very fortunate that the previous owners did a lot of work updating the home so it was turn key ready when we moved in. They also had great style so we were not in a situation where we needed to do a full on reno right when we moved in. This allowed us the time to save for big projects and carefully come up with a game plan for how we were going to transform the various spaces to feel more like us.
Our cape style house was built in 1928 so it presents some pretty interesting space challenges. Most of the rooms in our house are small and long like a bowling alley so trying to configure furniture is always a huge challenge. Our master bedroom is no exception.
Another challenge we have faced while styling our home is finding a way to incorporate our very different design styles. Elliott is a fan of the modern farmhouse look while I am a mixture of mid century modern meets boho chic. We could not be more different. Opposites really do attract!

Master Bedroom Inspiration
I really wanted our bedroom to feel like a cozy retreat. We both wanted a feature wall, to brighten up the space, create more room, and incorporate some beautiful greenery…Elliott is all about his plant babies.
The Feature Wall
We both agreed on shiplap for the feature wall but to spice things up a bit, we exposed the textured side of the wood instead of the traditional smooth, clean side. I also wanted that wall to scream “that’s a mood” so we picked a very dark navy, almost black paint color and did a bright white everywhere else for a beautiful contrast.
We used Behr’s “Calligraphy” for the feature wall and “Minimalistic” for the rest of the walls.
To recreate this look, the following supplies/ tools will be your best friend:
- Brad Nail Gun
- Air Compressor
- 1 3/4 inch Brad Nails
- Construction Adhesive (Liquid Nail)
- Square
- Miter Saw
- Step Stool
A Few Takeaways from our Feature Wall Project:
-Try to figure out the square footage of your feature wall to accurately calculate the materials needed to complete the project…then buy a few extra pieces of wood for good luck. I think we ended up going to Home Depot 5 times in one day. Don’t be like us.
-Paint the boards and wall prior to putting up the shiplap. Over time, the boards will settle and you will see gaps between the wood.
-Use a spacer between each row of wood. This ensures consistency throughout the project and makes the wall look uniform. We used a paint stick.

Our master bedroom project was pretty budget-friendly. This endeavor was not something we finished overnight…because we were really starting from scratch and I wanted to stick to a strict budget, I took advantage of major online sales when purchasing furniture. Big projects like this are worth the wait!
I could not be happier how our master bedroom makeover turned out. This room is easily one of my favorites as it combines both of our design styles. There is nothing better than a little sweat equity!
